Description
Thurman discusses the idea of brotherhood. He talks about the exclusiveness that is associated with brotherhood and the difference in how Jesus and Paul view it. Paul says that you have to be a follower of Christ to be part of the brotherhood, and Jesus says you just have to be born to be a brother. The basis of the Jesus doctrine of brotherhood is that God is the creator, so everyone is a part of God, and therefore all are brothers because of that virtue. God never discriminated, so neither should humans. Thurman also comments on the church's view on inclusiveness. The church puts the burden of inclusiveness on the actual person and the relationship with God, which naturally makes the church exclusive. Thurman also mentions how modern day imperialism was influenced by the Roman Empire with rights of citizenship. With this, Thurman shows how because Paul had Roman citizenship and Jesus didn’t, it impacted their respective views of brotherhood, and influenced the definition of brotherhood that we see in the church. Thurman also tells multiple anecdotes about his family and how they shaped his views on religion and relationship with the Christian church.
