Afternoon Seminar, Concludes Morning, Jesus and the Disinherited VII, VIII (Jesus and the Disinherited) [Side B], 1976 Feb 28

Description

Thurman starts this recording by telling multiple anecdotes that focus on the idea of sense of self, and the idea that people are victims to low expectations. He then proceeds to talk about how he wants to question how people in power got there, and the idea of mutual communication between people. He not only talks about relationships between people, but also how to escape one's own self destruction. Thurman also gives his opinions on the world that humans have created and how society is set up. There’s no protection from humiliation, and the world is divided. There is also divisiveness in the social welfare system with abuse of free lunch policies at schools. Thurman then relates that to brotherhood in the sense that if one is a part of the school, one should get a free lunch. He also gives advice on how to protect oneself when your back is against the wall, and the ways that he coped with bigotry and racism growing up. He also talks about the fact that a lot of people don’t want to look at more violent racism, and that society not only becomes like the things people like, but also the things they fear. Finally, he finishes by talking about deception, and the fact that it is a tool of the weak.
