Afternoon Seminar, Concludes Morning, Jesus and the Disinherited VII, VIII (Jesus and the Disinherited) [Side A], 1976 Feb 28

Description

In this recording, Thurman discusses techniques used for surviving seemingly unsurvivable situations. He then tells an anecdote about a time he had his back against the wall, and how he got out of it. Thurman states that if one can’t differentiate between their organization and their self, then they’ll become lost. Thurman also advises on ways to solve one's problems. He says to take one’s problem, and to put it in the widest context possible to be able to fully understand it and find a solution. Or, one can locate their problem and then define it. And once they have done that they can go to someone else with more experience, and then go and try out possible solutions. Thurman then circles back to the feeling of having one’s back against the wall, and how to escape it. He talks about the fear one feels, and how it creates a fight of flight response. With flight, one runs away from a scenario, but fight is actively resisting. Jesus fought by attacking the idea of fear. Thurman concludes by analyzing the fear and cage that stereotypes create. He states that if one has no sense of self, then they will get defined by someone else. Stereotypes make people feel like they can’t do things, and then others start believing the same things, and everyone becomes trapped by these stereotypes.
