Soundless Passion of a Single Mind, Lecture 3 (Starr King College), 1978 Jun 28

Description

Thurman begins this lecture by telling a story of a man with a bitter heart learning to forgive with the guidance of an angel and God. The angel strips him of all outward attributes and circumstances, which allows for the man to see everything and fully understand himself and God. After this, Thurman states how he wants to think with the audience in terms of his own journey in this lecture. Compromise is the first topic that Thurman discusses. He states that no man lives in a society that he approves of without some form of compromise, and also how a good man is one who as a part of the discipline of his life seeks to narrow the area of his compromises. If a person has any values at all, it is not possible to not compromise. Thurman says that he can’t separate compassion and reverence for life from killing life in order for him to eat which pits the integrity of self is at stake. With this, he states how he would never ask someone to do something that he wouldn't do himself. He is a back and forth vegetarian, and notes how everything is living, but where is the line drawn? He follows this by telling a few anecdotes that reveal his own reverence for life. He ends this lecture by stating that life is alive, and lives by eating itself, which is why it can never die.
